The Importance of Early Fertility Testing

For those experiencing issues conceiving naturally, the first step is understanding why this may happen. With wait times longer than ever, seeking help via the NHS can be lengthy.

Therefore, getting the initial fertility tests you need to diagnose potential issues may take several months, if not longer. And, as fertility treatment success rates are highly dependent on a patient's age, more and more people are turning to private clinics to understand their fertility status quickly.

At Essential Fertility, we are equipped to offer all initial investigations necessary for those looking to better understand their fertility without the added challenge of accessing these tests through their GP. Learn more about the importance of early fertility testing and how you could better understand your fertility in under a month with Essential Fertility.

What is a Fertility Assessment?

A fertility assessment is a series of initial investigations designed to give us a more comprehensive understanding of your fertility status and identify any concerns that may impact treatment.

For women and those assigned female at birth, we perform two tests at Essential Fertility to better understand your Fertility.

  • The first is an Anti-mullerian Hormone Blood Test, often referred to as an AMH blood test, and is a test to measure the level of AMH in your blood. AMH is the substance produced by the cells in the ovaries that surround developing eggs, and your level is a good indicator of your ovarian reserve. Your ovarian reserve estimates the number of eggs remaining in your ovaries. To proceed with Essential Fertility IVF/ICSI treatment, your AMH must be between 10 – 35.
  • The second would be a Transvaginal Ultrasound Scan, a scan of your womb and ovaries, including 3D imaging, to check for anything that could affect conception and embryo implantation. The internal scan gives us highly detailed information about your reproductive health. As part of your transvaginal scan, we will check your antral follicle count, which, like your AMH, indicates your ovarian reserve.

For men and those assigned male at birth, we perform a semen analysis, a test that checks several criteria such as sperm count as well as sperm shape and movement and assesses your ability to conceive

Can I Receive Fertility Treatment at Essential Fertility?

To proceed with Essential Fertility, we have to ensure our patients meet specific criteria, which are set to ensure the best possible success rates. The key indicators for all our treatment packages are age, BMI and ovarian reserve (AMH).

If the results of your investigations are favourable and show that you meet our eligibility criteria, you can begin your treatment with Essential Fertility or take some time to explore your options with a more informed understanding of your Fertility.

If you decide to progress with Essential Fertility, you could begin your treatment within a month. Our eligibility criteria ensure we can keep costs low and success rates high for our patients. You can learn more about our criteria for treatment on our website

How Much Would a Fertility Assessment Cost?

If you have been waiting for tests on the NHS, it is natural to be curious about how much fertility testing would cost at a private clinic. We have different tests and assessments, all available via our price list. We pride ourselves on the transparency and competitiveness of our testing costs.

You can request a price list today via our website.

When Should I Have a Fertility Assessment?

In the case of women and those assigned female at birth, there is typically a decrease in egg quality and quantity after age 30. Similarly, in men, there can be a significant decline in the quality of sperm once they enter their 40's. In these cases, early diagnosis can be instrumental in ensuring you can receive the treatment you need.

At Essential Fertility, we believe the sooner you understand your circumstances, the easier it is to make informed treatment decisions. If you are in a heterosexual relationship and have been having unprotected intercourse for more than a year and are yet to conceive, if you have anxiety about the natural decrease in Fertility that comes with age, or if you believe there may be an underlying issue with your Fertility, we encourage to reach out to our expert team for more advice or starting your fertility journey.
