Essential Fertility Celebrates International Nurses Day

At Essential Fertility, we are proud to show our support in celebrating the vital role nurses have in fertility treatment and healthcare. International Nurses Day takes place annually on May 12th, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. For this International Nurses Day, we caught up with our exceptional nursing team to discuss their experience and to learn more about what they love about their roles as an integral part of the Essential Fertility team.

Our Senior Fertility Nurses

Sam has always been interested in women's health, qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 1989 and then a Midwife in 1991. She then moved into fertility in 1993 and completed the Royal College of Nursing Assisted Conception course in 1994. Further studies were to follow when, a decade later, Samantha completed an ultrasound scanning course and was trained to perform Intra Uterine Inseminations (IUIs).

Sam is part of the S.I.N.G Senior Infertility Nurse Group, providing peer support, guidance and encouragement to our members, promoting education and training for all fertility nurses and healthcare assistants.

She joined our team in 1997 and has since been at the forefront of all nursing decisions. Experienced in midwifery and clinical practice, Samantha has been instrumental in developing our nurse-led fertility treatments for Essential Fertility alongside Dr Raj Mathur.

Sam says: "Needing help to conceive is perhaps the biggest issue facing many women today. What's important is that you don't wait to seek help. Try not to worry – we're a friendly team and will support you through every step."

With a long career history in fertility care at units and clinics in Ireland, Essex and London, Paula provides excellent clinical care to patients at our clinic, helping them through various stages of treatment.

She has vast experience overseeing fertility nursing teams, egg donation, and surrogacy. Paula likes to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field through HFEA and nursing forums. She welcomes the introduction of Essential Fertility treatments, which will make IVF more accessible to people across the country.

Paula says: "It's always a privilege getting to know the many different people who come to us for help. Everyone's circumstances differ, but as a fertility nurse, I'm here to support wherever needed as we all work towards creating a family."

Kate qualified as a Nurse, passing her BNurs (Hons) in 2004 and began working at St Mary's Hospital, Manchester, within the gynaecology department. She completed a Midwifery degree BMidwif (Hons) in 2007. Having developed an interest in IVF early in her career, Kate further explored this interest with a move to London to work at The Bridge Centre.

After returning to Manchester, Kate joined the reproductive medicine team at St Mary's, where she stayed for over ten years before joining Manchester Fertility.

Experienced in clinical care, Kate is very excited about Essential Fertility treatments and has been conducting nurse-led treatments such as IVF and IUI since 2008. She is fully competent in ultrasound scanning, following an Ultrasound Scanning for Reproductive Medicine course gained in 2014.

Kate says, "I adore working within this field of nursing and feel it is a real privilege to make a real difference in the lives of so many others. As nurses and midwives, we are here to provide and support patients through every step of their treatment."
